Bring Your Managed Chromebook

All the BYMC whats and why’s

If you’re a Chromebook school and have a BYOD programme (or are thinking about one) managing your BYOD Chromebooks centrally makes a lot of sense.

What is BYMC?

BYMC is a programme for schools that use Chromebooks for BYOD who choose to manage these centrally using Chrome Education Licenses (free for State and State-integrated schools).

Why manage student-owned Chromebooks?

Managing all your Chromebooks centrally means that various settings can be applied to ensure that student devices behave in the same way as school-owned machines. For example, schools can make sure only users within their domain can log in to the device, enforcing settings such as safe search and blocked URLs (the user will not be able to sign in via Gmail or as a guest). This will help you to deliver an optimal learning experience in the classroom, without the headache of monitoring off-task activity on unmanaged devices.

How does this benefit parents?

If parents choose not to enable off-hours settings, the Chromebook will behave in the same way at home (or anywhere else) as it does at school. This gives parents the ability to:

Keep their children safe online, with various levels of YouTube restrictions and blocked URLs applied 100% of the time.

Make screen time more productive – with selected apps and extensions disabled, students are more likely to use their device as a learning tool, rather than a time-wasting toy.

Disable and recover lost / stolen devices via settings in Chrome Education that lock down the Chromebook and pop up a message with a
return address.

What if parents want to have sign-in restrictions at school but not out of school hours?

Off-hours settings can be put in-place so that anyone can log in to the Chromebook after school finishes. This means that students can use their own personal logins and use their Chromebook as parents wish outside of school hours.
